What is SMS automation?

SMS automation sends text messages automatically when something happens: an order is placed, a payment is received, an appointment is near or a code is requested. Instead of someone writing and sending each message, software fills a template with the customer's details and sends it at the right time.

Why SMS still matters

SMS works on every phone without an app or data connection. That makes it dependable for OTPs, delivery alerts and time-critical reminders. Many businesses use SMS together with WhatsApp automation, using each where it fits best.

How commercial SMS works in India

India regulates business SMS through the telecom regulator and operators. Senders register on a system known as DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform through their provider. In practice you register:

  1. Your entity, the business sending messages
  2. Sender IDs or headers, the short name customers see
  3. Message templates, the approved wording with variable fields

Messages that do not match an approved template are blocked. Promotional messages also have to respect customer preference registries.

Types of SMS

  • OTP and authentication: login and payment codes
  • Transactional: order confirmations, payment receipts, delivery updates
  • Service reminders: appointments, renewals, due dates
  • Promotional: offers and announcements to people who have agreed

Best use cases

  • Appointment reminders that reduce no-shows
  • Payment due and payment received notifications
  • Dispatch and delivery updates
  • OTPs for login and verification
  • Renewal and subscription reminders
  • Two-way confirmations such as replying YES

How to set up SMS automation

  1. Choose a compliant SMS provider.
  2. Complete DLT registration for your entity, header and templates.
  3. Write short, clear templates with variables for name, date and amount.
  4. Connect triggers from your billing, booking or CRM system.
  5. Set timing, retries and quiet hours.
  6. Monitor delivery reports and fix failures.

Writing good SMS

  • Say who you are in the first few words
  • Put the key fact first: date, amount or code
  • Keep it short and plain
  • Include a way to opt out for promotional messages
  • Never send sensitive information in clear text
